Knitting for Afghanistan

I like to knit and watch TV
With a slice of cake and a cup of tea.
It should be relaxing to purl and plain
But the news is filled with war and pain.
Bombs and guns and WMD,
The rich getting richer and the poor not free.
Those deadly weapons have not been found.
Most alleged terrorists have gone to ground.

We know the news is mostly drama
And we seldom see the full panorama
But break it down into smaller parts.
There are human stories that break our hearts.
Children aged beyond their years,
Too traumatized and numb for tears.
Families displaced, their homes disrupted,
By wars or disasters their lives interrupted.

I drop some stitches as I think of their sadness.
Is the world full of evil or is it madness?
Pick up the stitches and shape for a vest,
Knit for the families who have been dispossessed.
Knitters united, we do what we can
For the suffering people of Afghanistan,
Sending warm garments to show that we care
For we are all family in this world that we share.
