Youth Campaign for Next Winter (Part 2)

Dear Knitters and Crocheters for Afghanistan,

We are continuing to knit and crochet for Afghan youth -- girls and boys, ages 7-14 years -- for next winter.

The emphasis is on sweaters, vests, mittens, and socks.

Again, we are partnering with Church World Service. Yes, this is a short period. This is because our (anonymous and generous) donation for the domestic portion of the long transit expires at the end of May. We have to use this donated shipping while we have it. We will try to get a renewal, but we can't count on this given economic conditions. Church World Service will add these cartons to the next container of their supplies for Pakistan/Afghanistan. Their containers go by sea to Karachi and then overland to Kabul. With container departures and transit time dependent on many variables and often unpredictable (including the customs process), getting our winter wool items in place in advance of winter makes sense. The result should be that the kids will be able to wear their garments for a full winter season. This arrangement seems prudent, based on our 8+ years of experience. Thanks for your understanding with our logistics -- always a challenge to coordinate with relief groups working in a war zone.

Many of you know that we have worked with Church World Service for many years.

Church World Service wants to maximize the number of kids receiving a wool garment with the available transit space. Therefore, we are primarily collecting sweaters, vests, mittens, and socks. We can accept some blankets, but not a lot because we cannot pack as many blankets per box. We can accept some hats, but have to limit this because everyone loves to make hats, and we usually get a disproportionate volume.

These are the priority items needed for girls and boys, 7-14 years:

  • Sweaters and Vests
-- Please add buttons if not sending a pullover garment; garments need to close up against cold.
-- Please be sure that sweaters have adequate coverage: full-length sleeves to the wrist (NO 3/4 sleeves); torsos need to be long for adequate coverage (NO bare midriffs).
    -- No hoodies, please.
  • Socks
-- Basic socks with proper heels and good cover for the lower leg (no booties or slippers).
-- Any foot length (measuring from back of heel to tip of toe) from about 6.5" - 10" will be useful. 14-year-olds can have adult-sized feet.
-- Socks for knitters only (crochet does not work well for socks).
-- We can never have enough socks!
  • Mittens

We can accept some hats and blankets, but please don't send if you can make the above items:

  • Hats
-- Be sure that hats cover ears.
-- Hats need some stretch for comfort over forehead.
  • Blankets
    -- Minimum dimensions of 40" x 45".
    -- Larger afghans should not exceed 50" x 50".

Please assume standard garment sizes. Afghan children may be thinner than North American children, but they are not shorter. Here's a size chart for reference.

Please DO NOT send any other items not listed above. Only the items above will be sent to Afghanistan.

    Additional information

  • Use wool (or other animal fiber) to provide maximum utility in harsh weather. Please review our memo on wool and fiber content.
  • Please avoid white and very light colors that soil more easily. Afghans like all colors -- bright and cheery palettes! No camo yarn. Use up those wool oddballs.
  • Knit or crochet your favorite pattern or try something new. Classic patterns are best.
  • Avoid lacy or airy patterns.
  • Test your garment on your own children or a neighbor's child ... to double-check proper fit.

Please review our GENERAL GUIDELINES and MAIL ADDRESS here.

    Due date: May 14

Feel free to mail completed items in advance of due date so we can stay on top of packing.

Please be sure to check this page (or our email list) for updates.

Email us when you send your gift, and we will acknowledge you by email. If you need confirmation that your package has arrived in San Francisco, please enclose a self-addressed stamped card, and we will mail it back to you. Or, use the signature request service of the delivery agent.

    Please spread the word now!

Another important way to participate ... please tell your fiber friends about our campaign. We count on volunteers for word-of-mouth to keep our momentum. Please share the link to this webpage. Add one of our banners to your blog or website.

We are committed to remembering the Afghan people. Reliable overseas transit and distribution are harder than ever to obtain -- and the chances to continue working with a relief agency of this caliber are few and far between. Church World Service takes care of the most vulnerable -- children who are orphans, living on the streets, those with the very least in one of the poorest countries in the world and devastated by war. We're stepping up to do what we can to comfort and warm children enduring hardship in wartime. Church World Service provides food, shelter, land-mine safety, health care and hygiene, schooling and training, and more. Church World Service has reliably worked in the region since 1954. (They do not proselytize.)

Church World Service does a superb distribution job -- organized, timely, and respectful. Please see photos from Kabul that show our hand-made wool gifts being delivered at lovely ceremonies over the last 2 years -- photos!

We are privileged to supply Church World Service. They know that the quality, beauty, and distinctiveness of our handmade gifts are not available in any store! They know that each item is lovingly created for a child in Afghanistan. And, we value their indispensable work.

When we receive specific requests from relief workers in Afghanistan, we want to help. The Afghan people still need to know that we care.

We are grateful for your generosity and enthusiasm. You are a tremendous group of compassionate and energetic volunteers!

    Tashakor,
    Ann and colleagues

In partnership with the San Francisco office of the American Friends Service Committee, the afghans for Afghans project started in late 2001 in response to the war that unfolded after 9/11. Who knew that eight years later, our handmade garments and blankets would still be needed in Afghanistan. Thank you for continuing to take action with your own hands to remember the Afghan people.
